The transition toward low-carbon energy systems is accelerating the integration of electricity, heating, cooling, gas, hydrogen, renewable energy, and energy storage. Integrated energy systems provide an effective framework for coordinating heterogeneous energy carriers and improving overall energy efficiency, operational flexibility, renewable energy accommodation, and system resilience. However, the strong coupling among multiple energy networks, the uncertainties of renewable generation and demand, and the participation of diverse market entities pose significant challenges to system planning, operation, and scheduling.
This special session focuses on recent theoretical advances, optimization models, computational methods, and practical applications for the planning and optimal scheduling of low-carbon integrated energy systems. Particular attention will be given to the coordinated planning of energy conversion and storage facilities, multi-energy flow modelling, source-grid-load-storage interaction, carbon-emission flow analysis, and the integration of low-carbon technologies such as hydrogen energy, carbon capture, power-to-gas, and multi-type energy storage. Advanced scheduling approaches based on mathematical programming, game theory, distributed optimization, artificial intelligence, and reinforcement learning are also encouraged.
The session aims to provide a platform for researchers, engineers, and industry practitioners to exchange new ideas and discuss emerging challenges in integrated energy system development. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
Prof. Bo Yang received a full scholarship from the China Scholarship Council (CSC) to pursue his Ph.D. degree in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Electronics at the University of Liverpool, U.K., and obtained his Ph.D. degree in December 2015. He has authored two Chinese-language monographs as the first author and published more than 200 SCI-indexed journal papers, including 11 ESI Highly Cited Papers and three ESI Hot Papers, as well as over 40 EI-indexed journal papers. He has led 41 research projects, including three projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and five provincial-level research projects funded by Yunnan Province.
He received the First Prize of the Electric Power Innovation Award in the Technical Category from the China Electricity Council in October 2018, the Second Prize of the China Industry-University-Research Institute Collaboration Innovation Award in December 2018, and the First Prize of the Science and Technology Progress Award from Yunnan Power Grid Co., Ltd. in December 2023. He was selected for the Young Top-Notch Talent Program under the inaugural “Ten Thousand Talents Program of Yunnan Province” in December 2018. He was named an Elsevier Highly Cited Chinese Researcher for five consecutive years from 2021 to 2025 and was included in both the career-long and single-year impact lists of the World’s Top 2% Scientists for four consecutive years from 2022 to 2025. He was also recognized as a CNKI Top 1% Highly Cited Scholar in both 2024 and 2025. In 2023, he undertook a CSC-funded academic visit to the University of Liverpool.
Prof. Yang serves as a member of the Youth Working Committee of the Eighth Council of the China Electrotechnical Society; an executive director of both the Energy Information and Social Systems Subcommittee and the Artificial Intelligence Applications in Dynamic Power Systems Subcommittee under the IEEE PES China Smart Grid and Emerging Technologies Committee; and a senior consulting expert of the Yunnan Electric Power Industry Association. He served as a keynote speaker at CEECT 2025 and ICGEPS 2026 and as General Chair of the IEEE International Conference on Power Science and Technology (ICPST 2023–2026).
